Everglades National Park is a national park in the U.S. state of Florida that protects the southern 25 percent of the original Everglades. It is the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States, and is visited on average by one million people each year. It is the third-largest national park in the lower 48 states after Death Valley and Yellowstone. It has been declared an International Biosphere Reserve, a World Heritage Site, and a Wetland of International Importance, only one of three locations in the world to appear on all three lists.

Humans likely first inhabited the South Florida region 10,000 to 20,000 years ago. Two tribes of Native Americans developed on the peninsula's southern tip: the Tequesta lived on the eastern side and the Calusa, greater in numbers, on the western side. The Everglades served as a natural boundary between them. The Tequesta lived in a single large community near the mouth of the Miami River, while the Calusa lived in 30 villages. Both groups traveled through the Everglades, but rarely lived within them, remaining mostly along the coast.

El Parque Nacional de los Everglades se encuentra en el extremo sureste de los Estados Unidos en el estado de la Florida. Protege la parte meridional de los Everglades, al sur de la carretera federal 41, que en su recorrido por el borde del parque nacional recibe el nombre de Tamiami Trail. El parque tiene una extensión de 6.104 kilómetros cuadrados, y sólo representa el 20% de la extensión original del humedal. Acoge un ecosistema principal y también único del mundo.

Everglades, cuya traducción podría ser " ciénagas eternas ", fue conocido por los españoles como Cañaveral de La Florida. Se cree que hace 10,000 a 20,000 años los seres humanos ya habitaban esta region del sur de la Florida.
